If you're a camper, you love camp! It's hard to know that some camps operated safely, but not all camps were able to be open in 2020. We want your help to convince state lawmakers to help camps for next summer.

But what can a kid do?

You can tell the adults who make the decisions about how and when camps can open about how much camp means to you. We're sure that if you send letters about camp and include your personal story, that will help those people understand just how important camp is.

But I've never done this before!

Camp is all about trying new things, right? This is just another new thing, and we're here to help you with this. Here's what you can do:

1. Find out who you should write to. If you click this link, and put in your address, you can find out which lawmakers represent you. When you click on their name, you'll find an address for you to send a letter to.

2. Write a letter. You can handwrite it or type it. Here's an example of what you could say (you just need to add your story to the parts where it asks you to, which are in red):

Date:

State Official

District Address

City, State Zip

Dear Politician (put in their name),

My name is Andy (put in your name) and I am a camper at Camp Awesometimes (put in the name of your camp). I have been going to camp there for 5 years (put in how long you’ve gone to camp) and camp is very important to me.

I am writing this letter to ask for your help. Last summer, my camp could not operate because of COVID-19. I understand that this was for everyone’s safety and that it was important to not spread the virus. However, we know a lot more about the virus than we used to and I think that we can safely have camp in 2021

Camp has told me that they cannot operate until the state tells them what guidelines they will need to follow to keep us safe at camp this summer. Can you please help the state release those rules so that camp can run in 2021?

I love going to camp because it gives me a chance to meet new people and try new things. It is a place where I can be outside and have adventures. I love the climbing wall and seeing my camp friends. Last year when camp was canceled I was so sad. And now, with school being online, I feel like I need the chance to get outside and play with kids my age is even more important.

(Explain why camp is important to you. What is your favorite activity? What have you learned at camp? Why do you want to go back? What was it like to not have camp in 2020? How did that make you feel? How would it make you feel if camp couldn’t run in 2021?)

It may seem like summer is a long way from now, but families and camps need to be able to know what they will need to do to keep campers safe. Please help them so that we can go back to camp in 2021!

Thank you so much for reading my letter. I hope to hear back from you and to hear that camps will have the rules they need to operate next summer.

(Sign the letter)

Type or print your name

3. Get an envelope. Write the address of the politician in the middle of the envelope and your name and address in the top left corner of the envelope. Have an adult help you find or buy a stamp. The stamp goes in the upper right corner of the envelope.

4. If you have a picture from camp that you think would help the elected official understand why camp is so important, add that to the letter.

5. Put your letter in the envelope, seal it, and send it!

6. If you have a social media account, share about sending your letter and use the hashtag #SaveNextSummer!
