What is happening in Ontario
On May 19, 2020 the Government of Ontario announced that overnight camps in Ontario would continue to be ordered closed throughout the summer. Day Camps were allowed to open in August, but many did not open for a variety of reasons.
More than 1,000 camps are in risk of permanent closure if they don’t receive funding support from the government. We are engaging in ongoing constructive dialogue with the federal government about securing the right help — including with senior leaders from the Prime Minister’s Office, the office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, and the office of the Minister of Economic Development.
Several OCA member camps successfully ran day camp programs during the summer of 2020. Click here to read about how Crestwood Valley Day Camp tackled the challenges of COVID-19!
Did you know?
More than 3 million children attend camp in Canada.
More than 70, 000 youth are employed in the camp industry each summer.
More than 30% of campers are from a vulnerable population and attend camp for free, or with financial assistance.
Help camps by taking action!
Our government supports the interests of the population – we need your help to make sure that our government knows that camp is an integral part of Canadian culture and needs support. Help us #SaveCanadianCamps by writing a letter to your Member of Parliament asking for their support. Head to our “For Grown-Ups” section for more information and for a template!
If you’re sending an email to your Member of Parliament, please cc Ontario Camps Association Executive Director, Joy Levy firstname.lastname@example.org
